I enjoy every climb - maybe it's because it's a literal dance between life and death.

Most
modern Christians suspect there must be more to our most precious and holy faith than is commonly experienced. Unfortunately, a plethora of obstacles seem to conspire to produce a general lukewarm response throughout the rank and file of Churchianity. Nevertheless, Scripture calls to every believer to get off our couches or even pews and rise to the occasion of seeking God with all our heart and soul, mind and strength.

For those interested in ascending and even "Summiting" the Mountain of the Lord, a few issues come to mind.
What preparation is required? What supplies are essential? Are the trails clearly marked? What are the major challenges and pitfalls? What's the reward awaiting us?

Who can climb Mount God? Who can scale the holy north-face?

- Romans 7:19 MSG

Genuine Christian growth can be hard to measure. For example, does simply attending church qualify? Does being a member for 20 years equate with 20 years experience or might many have 1 years worth of experience 20 times? What about the quality of Christianity being offered by various denominations and particular churches? Even if it should be good, is knowledge the same as maturity? Is recognizing and even agreeing with truth the same as embracing it? Are Christians called to simply believe or obey God? How much does the quantity and quality of obedience matter? Can it be a deal breaker?

Just a handful of question reveal the challenge and importance of genuine growth in Christ. Yet how many seriously pursue in depth understanding of our most precious faith, much the less the inner workings of worldly societies in which we must live it out?

Sadly, Churchianity takes it for granted that acknowledging Jesus as Savior equates to securing a saving relationship with the Lord of glory. Yet if only a fool would attempt the summit of Everest without a thorough and exhaustive preparation strategy, how much more diligence and endurance is required of those hoping to reach heaven by ascending "the mountain of The Lord " and that at a time of war:

  • "God claims Earth and everything in it, God claims World and all who live on it. He built it on Ocean foundations, laid it out on River girders. Who can climb Mount God? Who can scale the holy north-face? Only the clean-handed, only the pure-hearted; Men who won’t cheat, women who won’t seduce. God is at their side; with God ’s help they make it. This, Jacob, is what happens to God-seekers, God-questers. Wake up, you sleepyhead city! Wake up, you sleepyhead people! King-Glory is ready to enter. Who is this King-Glory? God, armed and battle-ready. Who is this King-Glory? God -of-the-Angel-Armies: he is King-Glory." Psalm 24:1-10 MSG

  • "God’s Message: “Guard my common good: Do what’s right and do it in the right way, For salvation is just around the corner, my setting-things-right is about to go into action. How blessed are you who enter into these things, you men and women who embrace them, Who keep Sabbath and don’t defile it, who watch your step and don’t do anything evil! Make sure no outsider who now follows God ever has occasion to say, ‘ God put me in second-class. I don’t really belong.’ And make sure no physically mutilated person is ever made to think, ‘I’m damaged goods. I don’t really belong.’” For God says: “To the mutilated who keep my Sabbaths and choose what delights me and keep a firm grip on my covenant, I’ll provide them an honored place in my family and within my city, even more honored than that of sons and daughters. I’ll confer permanent honors on them that will never be revoked. “And as for the outsiders who now follow me, working for me, loving my name, and wanting to be my servants— All who keep Sabbath and don’t defile it, holding fast to my covenant— I’ll bring them to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. They’ll be welcome to worship the same as the ‘insiders,’ to bring burnt offerings and sacrifices to my altar. Oh yes, my house of worship will be known as a house of prayer for all people.” The Decree of the Master, God himself, who gathers in the exiles of Israel: “I will gather others also, gather them in with those already gathered." Isaiah 56:1-8 MSG

  • "For on my holy mountain, the great mountain of Israel, says the Sovereign lord, the people of Israel will someday worship me, and I will accept them. There I will require that you bring me all your offerings and choice gifts and sacrifices. When I bring you home from exile, you will be like a pleasing sacrifice to me. And I will display my holiness through you as all the nations watch. Then when I have brought you home to the land I promised with a solemn oath to give to your ancestors, you will know that I am the lord. You will look back on all the ways you defiled yourselves and will hate yourselves because of the evil you have done. You will know that I am the lord, O people of Israel, when I have honored my name by treating you mercifully in spite of your wickedness. I, the Sovereign lord, have spoken!" Ezekiel 20:40-44 NLT

  • "God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels. Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out." Ephesians 6:10-18 MSG

  • "And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." Romans 12:1, 2 NLT
In the passage from Romans 12, the word "transform" is μεταμορφόω from μετά and μορφόω; to transform (literally or figuratively, "metamorphose"): change, transfigure, transform. Used to describe Christ's mountain top transfiguration in the company of Moses and Elijah:

  • "Six days later, three of them saw that glory. Jesus took Peter and the brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. Sunlight poured from his face. His clothes were filled with light. Then they realized that Moses and Elijah were also there in deep conversation with him. Peter broke in, “Master, this is a great moment! What would you think if I built three memorials here on the mountain—one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah?” While he was going on like this, babbling, a light-radiant cloud enveloped them, and sounding from deep in the cloud a voice: “This is my Son, marked by my love, focus of my delight. Listen to him.” When the disciples heard it, they fell flat on their faces, scared to death. But Jesus came over and touched them. “Don’t be afraid.” When they opened their eyes and looked around all they saw was Jesus, only Jesus." Matthew 17:1-8 MSG
These and countless other Scriptures extend an invitation, if not a command, to believers to undergo a radical metamorphosis like that of the caterpillar to a butterfly. Yet, given our modern unprecedented standard of living, hundreds of millions continue to fall prey to the ancient deception prevalent in the church of Laodicea:

  • "Write to Laodicea, to the Angel of the church. God’s Yes, the Faithful and Accurate Witness, the First of God’s creation, says: “I know you inside and out, and find little to my liking. You’re not cold, you’re not hot—far better to be either cold or hot! You’re stale. You’re stagnant. You make me want to vomit. You brag, ‘I’m rich, I’ve got it made, I need nothing from anyone,’ oblivious that in fact you’re a pitiful, blind beggar, threadbare and homeless. Here’s what I want you to do: Buy your gold from me, gold that’s been through the refiner’s fire. Then you’ll be rich. Buy your clothes from me, clothes designed in Heaven. You’ve gone around half-naked long enough. And buy medicine for your eyes from me so you can see, really see. The people I love, I call to account—prod and correct and guide so that they’ll live at their best. Up on your feet, then! About face! Run after God! Look at me. I stand at the door. I knock. If you hear me call and open the door, I’ll come right in and sit down to supper with you. Conquerors will sit alongside me at the head table, just as I, having conquered, took the place of honor at the side of my Father. That’s my gift to the conquerors! Are your ears awake? Listen. Listen to the Wind Words, the Spirit blowing through the churches.” Revelation 3:14-22 MSG
The salient issue before us is how willing and able are we to "hear with the Spirit is saying to the churches" particularly in our day and time? Another pertinent question would be why push on to maturity and perfection? The reasons are numerous, as vividly pointed out in a single passage:

  • "By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." 2 Peter 1:3-11 NLT
Peter assures that everything we need for the assent has been Divinely provided. He explains that only by pursuing and apprehending these additions to faith do we develop Kingdom love and fruitfulness, whereby we will never stumble and have our calling and election assured. He warns those failing to begin and complete the journey of transformation are "short sighted and blind." He promises God will provide those who do "a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
