Resistance

Few realize just how much resistance mankind in general and Christians in particular, face on a daily basis. While imperceptive
deceptions wear away at the foundations of our faith, direct challenges loom as giants, too often wreaking havoc with new and old converts alike.

Sexual sin and abortion, drug and alcohol abuse are just the tip of the iceberg tearing holes in the hulls of hundreds of millions of lives. Even those vigilant against gross sins often fall prey to rampant worldliness. Entitlement, the original sin, is on the rise within modern Church and considered normal and natural human behavior. Yet the Bible's clear that much if not all resistance is choreographed by supernatural beings who have deceived mankind, even God’s own people, for millennia. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Like
temptation, spiritual resistance arises from various sources and comes in many forms. As ubiquitous as gravity, it's pull can be so subtle as to go largely unnoticed for a lifetime, then suddenly hurdle us headlong to the ground. Other resistance is more obvious, coming full force threatening to destroy in a moment what may have taken a lifetime to build.

Opposition to our
seeking and serving God seems well orchestrated and wears many faces. Sadly, sometime as familiar as our own or those of family and friends. Often we're unaware that our thoughts and feelings, words and actions grieve the Holy Spirit and place stumbling blocks in our own path and those of others. Expert at rationalizing and justifying just about anything, we feel entitled to think and act as we do. Over time our choices, even those we've given little serious thought to, may become entrenched and fortified foes of habit and lifestyle.

Even when we mean well we can oppose our own soul and those we love the most:

  • “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” Jeremiah 17:9-10

  • “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword. ‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. Your enemies will be right in your own household!" Matthew 10:34-36
Mixing with modern temptations, the sin within each of us is quick to take advantage as Scripture points out:

  • What I don't understand about myself is that I decide one way, but then I act another, doing things I absolutely despise. So if I can't be trusted to figure out what is best for myself and then do it, it becomes obvious that God's command is necessary. But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can't keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don't have what it takes. I can will it, but I can't do it. I decide to do good, but I don't really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don't result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time. It happens so regularly that it's predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God's commands, but it's pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge. I've tried everything and nothing helps. I'm at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn't that the real question? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind, but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different." Romans 7:15-25 The Message
Making matters much worse is that on the path of seeking and serving God we are not alone. Scripture is clear a primary source of evil is an Evil One with a literal army of ancient, powerful and malevolent foes. These beings constantly inflame the sin within and around us and are a primary cause of all human rebellion and woe:

  • "A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places." Ephesians 6:10-12
One of the Adversary's greatest victories is hiding himself from those he attacks. Millions if not billions ravaged without mercy laugh at the notion that the Devil might be involved. Yet few concepts are more developed in Scripture than the reality of the cosmic war we daily face as victims, victors or more likely a little of both. Like France is World War II, Earth is occupied territory, in many ways under the control of the "prince and power of the air" who the Bible identifies as the "god of this world" who has "blinded the eyes of men to take them captive to do his will.”

This being the case, knowingly or not, all of humanity are either sympathizers, collaborators or resistance fighters. As Christians we daily, even moment by moment, decide which will be. Florence Nightingale, the famous 19th Century heiress who chose to spend her life serving the poor and needy as a nurse summed it up well:

  • "Life is a hard fight, a struggle, a wrestling with the principle of evil, hand to hand, foot to foot. Every inch of the way is disputed. The night is given to us to take a breath and to pray, to drink deep at the fountain of power. The day, to use the strength which has been given to us, to go forth to work with it till the evening."
Scripture reveals the spiritual battle facing every boy and girl, man and woman on earth requires far more discernment and diligence than is normally thought or taught. Just as Biblical salvation may be both an event and process, so too working out our salvation with fear and trembling requires a radical and lifelong commitment.

This perilous journey begins with serious
Bible study and prayer. Unfortunately, even in the face of absolute proof of God’s existence and mounting evidence for the inspiration of Scripture (when accurately interpreted) modern Christianity is largely Biblically illiterate. The average church attender is unable to quote 10 verses in a row or even 5 outside the Lord’s Prayer and perhaps Psalms 23 and thus Biblically illiterate. Add to this the lack of serious prayer (stopping to pray less than 10 minutes a day) and it would seem the bulk of Churchianity have become practical agnostics.

Such sobering statistics strongly suggest that untold millions of believers are being encouraged to simply
assume salvation by substituting presumption for faith rather than studying to show themselves approved by understanding and complying with the New Testament’s requirements for salvation and following Christ. Those gathering together are often misinformed as to the nature of genuine Christian fellowship and basic tenants in regards to prayer and worship. Failing to discern the difference between authentic Bible based churches among the dozens of differing denomination offering various doctrines and Christs, myriads of well meaning attenders are ill prepared for spiritual battle:

  • But the [Holy] Spirit explicitly and unmistakably declares that in later times some will turn away from the faith, paying attention instead to deceitful and seductive spirits and doctrines of demons, [misled] by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared as with a branding iron [leaving them incapable of ethical functioning], “ 1 Timothy 4:1-2 AMP

  • But [in those days] false prophets arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will subtly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways, and because of them the way of truth will be maligned. And in their greed they will exploit you with false arguments and twisted doctrine. Their sentence [of condemnation which God has decreed] from a time long ago is not idle [but is still in force], and their destruction and deepening misery is not asleep [but is on its way]. 2 Peter 2:1-3 AMP
What is need are prophetic Christians willing to invest the time to study Scripture’s explanation of positional verse conditional righteousness. Such men and women learn to differentiate between different levels of righteousness in regards to the kind of corporate and personal sanctification Scripture requires. Showing the passion and diligence of at at least amateur athletes, Prophetic Christians embrace the challenge of recognizing the yeast of double-mindedness and dualism knowing “if we would judge ourselves we would not be judged.” These, understanding the true value of honesty, admit that we may have crossed the line of needing mere renewal or revival to the point of requiring reformation.

It's high time we begin to
fear and seek God for holiness, power and commitment to be the Church rather than simply attend. Let us endeavor to understanding the signs and the times, heeding the Scripture’s prophetic advice to the point of calling for a national and global sacred assembly. Let us cry out for the gift of unprecedented repentance to soften our hard hearts in hopes of receiving a New Pentecost. Together let us tarry until we are transformed into the kind of Kingdom soldiers who can fulfill Christ's Great Commission, being filled with the fruit and gifts of the Spirit, particularly that of healing the sick, performing signs and wonders and even the kind of "mustard seed faith" Jesus promised those who fully believe and obey!

The following are some of the points and passages we unpack in our QC Podcast Demonic Resistance:


  • Adam slept with Eve his wife. She conceived and had Cain. She said, “I’ve gotten a man, with God’s help!” Then she had another baby, Abel. Abel was a herdsman and Cain a farmer. Time passed. Cain brought an offering to God from the produce of his farm. Abel also brought an offering, but from the firstborn animals of his herd, choice cuts of meat. God liked Abel and his offering, but Cain and his offering didn’t get his approval. Cain lost his temper and went into a sulk. God spoke to Cain: “Why this tantrum? Why the sulking? If you do well, won’t you be accepted? And if you don’t do well, sin is lying in wait for you, ready to pounce; it’s out to get you, you’ve got to master it.” Cain had words with his brother. They were out in the field; Cain came at Abel his brother and killed him.” Genesis 4:1-8 MSG
This raises the question: To rebuke or not to rebuke that is a question. And if to rebuke, how?

  • “Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.” Jude 1:8-10 NKJV
The battle is not won by catch phrases or words at all, but as Paul explains in “For the kingdom of God is not based on talk but on power.” 1 Corinthians 4:20 AMP

Just talking a good game didn’t work out too well for the Seven sons of Sceva:


  • “God did powerful things through Paul, things quite out of the ordinary. The word got around and people started taking pieces of clothing—handkerchiefs and scarves and the like—that had touched Paul’s skin and then touching the sick with them. The touch did it—they were healed and whole. Some itinerant Jewish exorcists who happened to be in town at the time tried their hand at what they assumed to be Paul’s “game.” They pronounced the name of the Master Jesus over victims of evil spirits, saying, “I command you by the Jesus preached by Paul!” The seven sons of a certain Sceva, a Jewish high priest, were trying to do this on a man when the evil spirit talked back: “I know Jesus and I’ve heard of Paul, but who are you?” Then the possessed man went berserk—jumped the exorcists, beat them up, and tore off their clothes. Naked and bloody, they got away as best they could." Acts 19:11-16 MSG

  • “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:10-18

  • “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one." 2 Thessalonians 3

  • “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

  • “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings." 1 Peter 5:8-9

  • “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 4:7

  • “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:37-39

  • “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." Colossians 1:13-14

  • “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,” I Timothy 4:1 NKJV

  • “But I am afraid that, even as the serpent beguiled Eve by his cunning, your minds may be corrupted and led away from the simplicity of [your sincere and] pure devotion to Christ. For [you seem willing to allow it] if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted. You tolerate all this beautifully [welcoming the deception].” 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 AMP

  • “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10

  • “We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.” I John 5:18 NKJV

  • “They even sacrificed their sons And their daughters to demons, And shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with blood.” Psalms 106:37-38 NKJV

  • “And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” Luke 22:31-32 NKJV

  • “And a Canaanite woman from that district came out and began to cry out [urgently], saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David (Messiah); my daughter is cruelly possessed by a demon.” But He did not say a word in answer to her. And His disciples came and asked Him [repeatedly], “Send her away, because she keeps shouting out after us.” He answered, “I was commissioned by God and sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and began to kneel down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” And He replied, “It is not good (appropriate, fair) to take the children’s bread and throw it to the pet dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord; but even the pet dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their [young] masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, your faith [your personal trust and confidence in My power] is great; it will be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that moment.” Matthew 15:22-28 AMP
So never take no for an answer! Along those same lines:

  • “And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:28-29 NKJV See Triple Fasting podcast.

  • “During those days, I, Daniel, went into mourning over Jerusalem for three weeks. I ate only plain and simple food, no seasoning or meat or wine. I neither bathed nor shaved until the three weeks were up. “On the twenty-fourth day of the first month I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris. I looked up and to my surprise saw a man dressed in linen with a belt of pure gold around his waist. His body was hard and glistening, as if sculpted from a precious stone, his face radiant, his eyes bright and penetrating like torches, his arms and feet glistening like polished bronze, and his voice, deep and resonant, sounded like a huge choir of voices. “I, Daniel, was the only one to see this. The men who were with me, although they didn’t see it, were overcome with fear and ran off and hid, fearing the worst. Left alone after the appearance, abandoned by my friends, I went weak in the knees, the blood drained from my face. “I heard his voice. At the sound of it I fainted, fell flat on the ground, face in the dirt. A hand touched me and pulled me to my hands and knees. “‘Daniel,’ he said, ‘man of quality, listen carefully to my message. And get up on your feet. Stand at attention. I’ve been sent to bring you news.’ “When he had said this, I stood up, but I was still shaking. “‘Relax, Daniel,’ he continued, ‘don’t be afraid. From the moment you decided to humble yourself to receive understanding, your prayer was heard, and I set out to come to you. But I was waylaid by the angel-prince of the kingdom of Persia and was delayed for a good three weeks. But then Michael, one of the chief angel-princes, intervened to help me. I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia. And now I’m here to help you understand what will eventually happen to your people. The vision has to do with what’s ahead.’ “While he was saying all this, I looked at the ground and said nothing. Then I was surprised by something like a human hand that touched my lips. I opened my mouth and started talking to the messenger: ‘When I saw you, master, I was terror-stricken. My knees turned to water. I couldn’t move. How can I, a lowly servant, speak to you, my master? I’m paralyzed. I can hardly breathe!’ “Then this humanlike figure touched me again and gave me strength. He said, ‘Don’t be afraid, friend. Peace. Everything is going to be all right. Take courage. Be strong.’ “Even as he spoke, courage surged up within me. I said, ‘Go ahead, let my master speak. You’ve given me courage.’ “He said, ‘Do you know why I’ve come here to you? I now have to go back to fight against the angel-prince of Persia, and when I get him out of the way, the angel-prince of Greece will arrive. But first let me tell you what’s written in The True Book. No one helps me in my fight against these beings except Michael, your angel-prince." Daniel 10:2-21 MSG

Heres one your really not going to like…

  • “Following this I saw another Angel descend from Heaven. His authority was immense, his glory flooded earth with brightness, his voice thunderous: Ruined, ruined, Great Babylon, ruined! A ghost town for demons is all that’s left! A garrison of carrion spirits, garrison of loathsome, carrion birds. All nations drank the wild wine of her whoring; kings of the earth went whoring with her; entrepreneurs made millions exploiting her. Just then I heard another shout out of Heaven: Get out, my people, as fast as you can, so you don’t get mixed up in her sins, so you don’t get caught in her doom. Her sins stink to high Heaven; God has remembered every evil she’s done. Give her back what she’s given, double what she’s doubled in her works, double the recipe in the cup she mixed; Bring her flaunting and wild ways to torment and tears. Because she gloated, “I’m queen over all, and no widow, never a tear on my face,” In one day, disasters will crush her— death, heartbreak, and famine— Then she’ll be burned by fire, because God, the Strong God who judges her, has had enough. “The kings of the earth will see the smoke of her burning, and they’ll cry and carry on, the kings who went night after night to her brothel. They’ll keep their distance for fear they’ll get burned, and they’ll cry their lament: Doom, doom, the great city doomed! City of Babylon, strong city! In one hour it’s over, your judgment come! “The traders will cry and carry on because the bottom dropped out of business, no more market for their goods: gold, silver, precious gems, pearls; fabrics of fine linen, purple, silk, scarlet; perfumed wood and vessels of ivory, precious woods, bronze, iron, and marble; cinnamon and spice, incense, myrrh, and frankincense; wine and oil, flour and wheat; cattle, sheep, horses, and chariots. And slaves—their terrible traffic in human lives. Everything you’ve lived for, gone! All delicate and delectable luxury, lost! Not a scrap, not a thread to be found! “The traders who made millions off her kept their distance for fear of getting burned, and cried and carried on all the more: Doom, doom, the great city doomed! Dressed in the latest fashions, adorned with the finest jewels, in one hour such wealth wiped out! “All the ship captains and travelers by sea, sailors and toilers of the sea, stood off at a distance and cried their lament when they saw the smoke from her burning: ‘Oh, what a city! There was never a city like her!’ They threw dust on their heads and cried as if the world had come to an end: Doom, doom, the great city doomed! All who owned ships or did business by sea Got rich on her getting and spending.
