Psalms in the Night

With so many wonderful Biblical promises and powerful examples of God's interaction with mankind, see Psalms of Delight, Psalms in the Night are a way of exploring and sharing some of the difficult and challenging thoughts, feelings and experiences God's people encounter while endeavoring to fully enjoy His presence and power, protection and provision. In ever more genuine and meaningful ways. For themselves and their children, family and friends.

Psalms in the Night are written in concert with Psalms of Delight. Both series contain Modern Psalms meant to comfort and inspire those seeking the Omni-God revealed in Scripture.

Moody Blues Summary

Music's a powerful medium. European digital online sales alone are nearly 5 billion dollars annually. Even more telling is how society, from morality to religion, sways to the contemporary music and walks to the beat of an unseen drummer. While sometimes beautiful and inspiring, something subtle and sinister moves billions in dangerous directions. Even so, within the cacophony of lyrics and melody, a cry to God for meaning can often be heard.

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.

- Psalm 96:1

Moody Blues

Modern Psalm in the Night 7

I wonder if You have mixed feelings about music? I do. We're moved and haunted by the stuff. It inspires and tempts our minds and souls. Sometimes for better, often for worse.

We've accumulated quite a collection. A symphony of genres, from Johann Sebastian Bach's overtures to the Moody Blues. From Death Metal to Country. From Gangster Rap to Soul. From beloved Hymns to Christian Grunge.

I've got mixed feelings myself. On the one hand, many of today's songs and music videos boarder on the obscene. Others crossed that boarder long ago. Glorifying hormones rather than Your
holiness, they incite lust as they stoke and stimulate sin.

On the other hand, there are exquisitely written and performed pieces that elevate and encourage the best in us. Something we could use a lot more of.

I wonder if Your favorites aren't the ballads of longing. Not so much for human companionship, though charity and even romantic love, when done right, are wonderful things. I was thinking more along the lines of a cry to be filled with something more.
Someone more. Born of our desire for a happiness that lasts. Born from an innate desire for glory.

You know better than any the power of music. Even Heaven's been rocked by it. If Lucifer was indeed the Archangel of Worship, his
fall and that of billions of glorious angels, has framed both time and Eternity.

You see his influence growing exponentially on Earth. Eons of
devilish planing are coming to fruition. The rhythms and and lyrics of his rebellion are ubiquitous. Sometimes subtle, sometimes not, strains of his melodies are present in everything from government to business, education to technology, art to entertainment. And religion... In many ways the message of Your Son's being drowned out by the melody of his deceptions. Deceptions to which even myriad's of we Christians daily fall prey.

Deceptions recognizable in our music if one has the
ear to hear.

Nevertheless, a cry for help can still be heard. Faint as it is. Tainted and convoluted as it may be. I know if I can make it out, You hear it clearly. Without knowing to Whom they sing. Without knowing who's capture them. A thousand tongues sings songs of deliverance against the darkness.

I pray they're songs are not in vain.

Within the first hour of waking I had several songs annoyingly running through my mind. I wrote this psalm as an excuse to sing one to You, the chorus of which I've sung as a personal and corporate prayer many times before. I hope You like it. Remember, You said to "sing a new song." Sometimes I change a word or two, but this time I'll use the straight version of "Question" from those contemporary psalmists the
Moody Blues performed ad Royal Albert Hall. I offer it as one of my generation's variations on Christ's theme to "ask, seek and knock..."

Question

Why do we never get an answer
when we're knocking at the door?
With a thousand millions questions
about hate and death and war.

It's where we stop and look around us
there is nothing that we need.
In a world of persecution
that is burning in it's greed.

Why do we never get an answer
when we're knocking at the door?
Because the truth is had to swallow
that's what the wall of love is for.

It's not the way that you say it
when you do those things to me.
It's more the way that you mean it
When you tell me what will be.

And when you stop and think about it
you wont believe it's true.
That all the love you've been giving
has all been meant for you.

I'm looking for someone to change my life.
I'm looking for a miracle in my life.
And if you could see what it's done to me
to loose the love I knew
could safely lead me through.

Between the silence of the mountains
and the crashing of the sea
there lies a land I once lived in
and she's waiting there for me.

But in the grey of the morning
my mind becomes confused
between the dead and the sleeping
and the road that I must choose.

I'm looking for someone to change my life.
I'm looking for a miracle in my life.
And if you could see what it's done to me
to loose the love I knew
could safely lead me to
the land that I once knew.
To learn as we grow old
the secrets of our souls.

It's no the way that you say it
when you do those things to me.
It's more the way that you mean it
When you tell me what will be.

Why do we never get an answer
when we're knocking at the door?
With a thousand millions questions
about hate and death and war.

It's where we stop and look around us
there is nothing that we need.
In a world of persecution
thais is burning in it's greed.

Why do we never get an answer
when we're knocking at the door.
